    the tragic truth

I thought this was hilarious. Richard wouldn't stop playing this today in the office. Making the rounds on various sites. Got the link from Gareth Kay's Brand New. I tragically realized we were watching on a dell....aww i miss my mac @office. And the bigger question is, if everyone loves this, why don't more people have macs?

    Flashback

I remember when people would reminisce and i would feel too young to worry. Well now im starting to get dated, because 20 year anni's are coming and going. The nintendo entertainment system is 20 years old. I had to salute this momentous occasion in my life, Meghan would say otherwise. Gamespot has been waxing nostalgiac for the NES, the little grey console that’s graced us with over twenty years of 8-bit gaming goodness. Their classic Nintendo retrospective includes interviews with several NES-era game testers, public relations folks, and customer support employees, who reveal some great insight into their gaming joys and plights. They also cover some quality NES titles you may have missed (like Stinger!), so check it out. These were the days!!!! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Contra, Duck Hunt, PowerPad, Tecmo Bowl, SMB3...... ahhhhh glory days

    The New Dunks

Im turning into a bit of a sneakerhead I will admit it. Scion has been done so right since its inception. This doesn't surprise me in the least. The car doesn't look like a sneaker, but it is being released like one. Automotive manufacturers have always done limited edition versions, but they have never made a big claim about the limited numbers available. It launched, in the past week a limited edition version of the XB. The vehicle is only available in "Envy Green" and has a range of entertainment options including LCD screens in the rear of the front headrests. There are wild postings all over New York touting the fact that there are only 2,200 of these monsters available. The whole Release 3.0 nomenclature suggests there will be more versions to follow. So it looks like Scion is going to borrow from sneaker culture and launch multiple variants across the same platform and mix these models with it's personalization message.

    be heard

This is old-hat by now but, Tunecore is a music publishing service that allows any artist to sell their music on two of the most powerful music sellers: iTunes and Rhapsody. Their system allows music artists to upload their tunes to their site and then sell via the music retail giants without taking any rights nor proceeds from the sale. Yet another middleman in the music world, but one that at least gets you a venue. I find this the update of the promoter, yet with out the cheesy/sleazy side. And i dont think it wipes them out completely either.

history repeats itself: history repeats itself

Loooots in the pipe today and soon for you filtererssss. Im off today to see my sis in slightly warmer philadelphia. Lots of pictures coming from this mini-adventure. I always get the feeling that history repeats itself. It seems that just sometimes a little technology is needed to get it over that hump. This is a floating luxury hotel concept that may be realised by as soon as 2010, Popular Science suggests. This is not a Blimp. It's a sort of flying Queen Mary 2 that could change the way you think about air travel. It's the Aeroscraft, and when it's completed, it will ferry pampered passengers across continents and oceans as they stroll leisurely about the one-acre cabin or relax in their well-appointed staterooms. Welcome to cruising blade-runner style. Do people really want to cruise at 174mph in this big turtle shell beats me? And is Moby the man behind this contraption?

    Touching Is Good

I was going to think of something insightful but i forgot. I was thinking of some mega-global-trend that i could report on but it got lost. Instead here are the patent pictures for apple for the new video touchscreen ipod. Work is massively busy and life is just moving a bit too quick to devote too much time. In case you are still living in that cave of yours, Some documentation that claims to be from Apple’s patent applications has popped up around the web. One of the interesting illustrations shows a larger format screen using two-handed touchscreen action, check it out after the jump. Apple iTablet and touch-screen iPod? Hooray! i will post something more a little clever later.

    THE NEXT ITUNES

Back in October 05 Piers on PSFK talked about the Battle For The Bulge - a battle in terms of portable media and telecoms, and the advantage Apple has in the market:
"Apple can defend its position in the short term through iTunes. It stops the phone brands in their tracks. But consider iTunes as an early version of Windows - it's an inflexible monopolistic proprietary system just waiting to be cracked and reworked over by some Linux dudes." Now, some dudes have started to crack iTunes, Boing Boing reports. A team have released a preview edition of Songbird: a desktop media player that offers an open source alternative to services like Apple's iTunes and the Windows Media Player. Instead of connecting to one locked store full of DRMmed goods, it can connect to any and all available music (and video) on the internet. Ahh technology by us for us. Gotta love those linux guys, always crackin, always producing. While few of us have issues with itunes and its protection, its great to have a player that lets you download(i dont condone this) in one application.

    The Life(style) Company

Honda announced it will began building a new fuel cell vehicle, with the first Honda FCX model hydrogen-powered fuel cell car rolling off the assembly line “within three or four years.” Along with unique ways of arranging the fuel cells within the vehicle, Honda also dreamed up an idea for obtaining the hydrogen necessary to fuel this baby.

Called the Home Energy Station, it gins up hydrogen right there in your garage, converting it from readily-available natural gas. Not only would you be able to use that hydrogen for the vehicle, you could also use it in fuel cells that would provide electricity for your house as well. Tanks positioned under the car’s trunk will hold enough hydrogen to keep its fuel cells humming for 350 miles. Honda says this system can save 50% on not only vehicle fuel bills, but household electricity, too.

By the way, also inside the Honda FCX concept car at the Detroit Auto Show was a 3D-rendering navigation system, whose point of view hovers at street level when you’re turning, but returns to a bird’s-eye view for long cruises. This is amazing. Honda is truly becoming a lifestyle innovation company. Why can't any American companies come up with these types of things? Clearly there is a market for it. Clearly the future of fuel dependency is not wood chips at Bush suggested. Kudos to Honda for going lightyears beyond.

    VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

FON, a company that aims to become the largest hotspot network in the world by the end of this year. The idea is to install the FON software on your WiFi router, place your antenna next to the window and then share your bandwidth with the rest of the world. Suddenly, you’re a FONero! This status gives you the right to use the bandwidth of any of your FON comrades.

Now FON has gotten a bit of a turbocharge from global P2P phone pioneer Skype, another company that knows a little about putting a wrench in the works of the fat-ass telcos of the world. Skype has plunked down an unspecified amount of money as an investment in this new FON company, which has exponentially multiplied from zero users to more than 30,000 in just 90 days. Is it a revolution driven by the “power of community?”

    Channel Islands

Influx has a great post on communication channels at the LIFT06 conference yesterday, Stefana Broadband, an ethnologist working for Swisscom Innovations, presented the results of her study into the role different communication channels.

    # Fix phone – the collective channel ("a shared organisational tool for the whole household", with most calls done in "public", because they have relevance to other members of the household, only 25% "privately" from one's bedroom or study)
    # Mobile voice – the micro coordination channel ("mobile voice is the preferred channel for last-minute adjustment of plans or updates on where people are, what they are doing" - as in the classic "I am parking the car in front of the house, darling"...) (And Broadbent puts on the table this other surprising figure about mobile communication: "On average people communicate regularly only with 4 partners on the mobile phone: 80% of exchanges are with 4 people")
    # SMS – the intimate channel ("SMS is for intimacy, emotion and efficiency; only the most intimate sphere of friends and family are contacted by SMS, and the content of the messages is often related to “grooming” and emotional exchanges").
    # Email – the administrative channel (used to support online activities such as travel and shopping preparation ("services"); for coordination with extended social groups - clubs, friends, acquaintances; to exchange pictures and music and other content with close social networks". While "e-mail is the exclusive channel for collective communication - sending a message to multiple partners")
    # IM and VoIP – the continuous channels ("users open an IM communication channel for the day and then just keep it open in the background while they do other activities - multitask - and step in and out of a conversation"; she adds that this starts to apply to VoIP as well).
    # Blogging – the networking channel ("a personal page in Myspace is primarily a center of communication with friends and people online in general; everyone can read not only what you post but also what people comment; that makes communication not only one-to-one but networked between people who cross reference each other - and the number of communication partners can be hugely extended").

Very cool simplistic views on communications.

Voltron saves the family but wrecks car and kills dog

Shit is getting crucial over in Japan now that they have this ED2000 mofo rolling the streets. Hyper rescue robot "T-52 Enryu" (rescue dragon) from Tmsuk first appeared in March 2004 but now he’s wandering the highways and byways saving stranded motorists from having to eat each other like sashimi. It is 11.3 ft high and with a weight of 11,020 lbs. On February 1, 2006, Enryu showed his POWER in snowy environments and in a test rescued a dummy buried under snow in his car. Enryu can lift 1102 lbs. with one hand and double that with both hands, but then where will he hold his coffee? He’s still in development and expected to play an active part in rescues where it is difficult to work for human being rescue teams or where there are worries about secondary disasters. HOW COOL IS THIS??? In America, we have the jaws of life...kinda puny when you think about it.

    Can I drive?

    TV Next?

Last week Channel 4 'aired' their new IT Show one week before its broadcast on TV. Now Nickelodeon and Comedy Central are putting shows on iTunes before they are shown on television, iPodbank.com tells us. Nickelodeon just put a new episode of Zoey 101 called "Girls Will Be Boys" ahead of its January 29th network debut and Comedy Central will put a new episode of "Drawn Together" three days before its February 1 network debut. Fantastic! Can we please take the box off its pedestal? Wonder how this will impact the price of flatscreen TV's as it becomes less of THE source. On the otherhand who enjoys watching shows on an iPod if you have the option of a flatscreen megatron? Add another choice to the sensory input lineup as well as Apple's campaign to get into our living room. Think of a company better moving forward into our lives than Apple?
